Solids and Liquids
This week, we discussed the different freezing, melting & boiling points of materials and how they change at different temperatures. We used coloured ice cubes and predicted what would happen. We had to explain it in terms of the properties of solids & liquids. We knew that ice was a solid and therefore the particles remained fixed in place and the colours stayed separate but when the ice melted the particles in the liquid were free to move and flow. The water from the ice cubes mixed and so the two colours mixed to make a third colour.
We also investigated the effect of salt on the ice cubes and how quickly they melted.
